The Black Belt Poker League returns this Tuesday for its first outing of the new year. The final digit in the date may have changed, but the value at Black Belt Poker continues to deliver as we serve up our usual dose of bonuses and rewards.
This time around, we’re offering four lucky players the chance to play a Black Belt Live event and echo the achievements of Nottingham Live champion Stuart Hyson who won $15,500 when he captured the title at Dust Till Dawn.
In 2012, we plan to host three Black Belt Live events, and if you finish in the top three of League XIII, you will receive free entry into a Main Event of your choosing, wherever the venue may be. In addition, the overall Champion will earn himself a personalised Black Belt Poker hoodie, as well as all the bragging rights he can handle.

So Monday is blog night for me. Only this week I’m a little stuck on what to actually talk about. I really should be talking about how the last month has been going and how I’m so much closer to reaching my purple belt on Black Belt Poker. Despite playing a little more than I normally do, I feel that I’ve really lost my focus the last 2 weeks, as I have been mainly looking after the dog. I was off Thursday to Monday and I had so much planned for the weekend. Plenty of people were playing in the EPT London, but I had planned a visit to Wales to catch up with family and friends. However, pooch still wasn’t well, so I had to cancel and ended up staying home and watching him all weekend. This meant that I didn’t have access to play much poker.

Every time I picked the book up my girlfriend started some random conversation with me, so that wasn’t something I was ever going to be able to focus on. The freak heat wave is really not something I’m enjoying either. It’s October FFS and should be cold and raining, maybe in a few weeks start snowing. Instead we ended up having a BBQ and sitting in the garden chilling and having a few beers. Which lead to me being bitten alive by nats . The only other thing I ended up doing was spending 10 hours watching a series called Party Down. It was quite a funny series and worth a watch, but there were all distractions that I didn’t need.

At the moment the amount of poker that I was planning on playing is what is actually putting me off playing. The desire to win is messing up my focus and enjoyment of generally playing the game. I feel that poker for me should be something that I enjoy playing and not something that I feel I need to do well at. This and the fact that there seems to be so much bad press surrounding the game at the moment. People being caught cheating and banned from networks and there is still no resolution to the fiasco that is Full Tilt Poker.

Plan this week will be to play the orange belt freeroll, play some SNG’s, maybe a little amount of cash and then see generally how it goes. I’ve still a lot of the poker book to read “the mental game of poker” and plenty of Deuces cracked videos to watch.

The week started off really well, Watched some coaching Kristy series on Deuces Cracked, read some more of Jared book and was really starting to feel ready to attack the tables.

Tuesday was Black Belt Poker League day. I had banked a set of 5 tickets in the previous weeks Orange Belt Freeroll. I was so far behind in the league on points I had to play for the win, however a couple of bluff attempts landed me in hot water and I was out before I knew it.

Wednesday - Even though I thought I was focused and ready to play, it seems I was in total denial that anyone could possible have a better hand than me and I was out of the Orange Belt Freeroll quicker than I could blink.

Thursday was a planned day away from poker and a chilled night was had just went over to the inlaws and caught up on some TV that I had recorded earlier in the week.

Friday Zoggy Doggy Day
It was a day off the normal daily grind of work, as I was taking the dog to the vets. Also lined up for the evening was to go in to London for an evening of Duplicate Poker as part of team Zenga Zenga. I had played duplicate poker some time ago, as an online concept, but that didn't work out too well, so here is my understanding of the game.

Tuesday was Black Belt Poker League day. I had banked a set of 5 tickets in the previous weeks Orange Belt Freeroll. I was so far behind in the league on points I had to play for the win, however a couple of bluff attempts landed me in hot water and I was out before I knew it.

Wednesday – Even though I thought I was focused and ready to play, it seems I was in total denial that anyone could possible have a better hand than me and I was out of the Orange Belt Freeroll quicker than I could blink.

I'm not sure if you have ever heard of Duplicate poker, but this event consisted of 6 teams of 6 players. A player from each team then sits at a different seat on a different table. Each hand was always played with a starting stack of 5000 chips and depending on how many chips you won or lost was then converted to points. The one with the most points at the end of the number of hands was then declared the winner (or so is my understanding). Not only are you playing against the players on your table, but also trying to accumulate more points than the other 5 players in your same seat. Oh and each table is dealt the same cards as each of the other tables. It was a strange but fun concept to play. The plan was to play down 100 hands, but this was cut short to 60 hands on 6 tables. Obviously this can take a lot of planning and a couple of times the button wasn't in the correct place, so I think some people were not dealt the correct hands. Some tables were playing a lot more aggressive than others, so it was quite hard to get the right balance. However it was a fun concept to be a part of the trials in.

After getting home friday evening, the rest of the weekend was spend looking after Zoggy Doggy following his operation on the friday. He really wasn't resting and I had to make sure he didn't pull the stitches out, so really didn't get any chance to play much poker and when I did I was just on the mac, so no chance building up of points as planned. So at the end of the week I'm still 1000 points away from purple.

This week's plan.. is mainly sleep, poker on Tuesday and Wednesday evening, but I'm then away until Monday, so will not really have chance again to put in the hours for needed points. If only iPoker would hurry up support Mac poker players. (crosses fingers).

As I'm away for the weekend with my Mac for company, I will mainly be finishing off Coaching Kristy series and also reading and making some more notes from Jareds book. This time next week I hope to have more of a plan ready to attack the tables for a more constructive week…

So for anyone that has got to the bottom and thought eh! what the heck was that all about? Well I think it shows the state of mind that I am in at the moment. No structure and when I do put together a plan it just never seems to go as planned…

Oh and if you were wanting to know how Team Zenga Zenga got on, well, there was a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finnish on the team, but we were out side the top 3 as a team. Onwards and upwards and more poker soon.

A couple of weeks ago, as part of a poker study group we talked about setting targets and goals. Before this I had never really had a major goal, other than I wanted to win (don’t we all). However, it seems that in order to win better I should have clear goals and targets to aim for. Otherwise winning will just be a by product. I’ve now taken time to set myself some milestone targets in order to reach my main goal.

I will not bore you all with the details, as they are also likely to change (depending on how well each target goes), but my overall goal is to become a winning player on the cash tables and to move up through the limits of 20nl, 50nl and within a year to be playing 100nl.

As part of the goals I’ve made sure part of my targets include watching a certain amount of training videos, reading the collection of poker books that I have built up over time and talking about my own thoughts on poker. My first read will be a recently purchased a copy of Jared Tendler’s book called the Mental Game of Poker.

Generally my new typical weekly poker schedule will include the following (As I work full time, this is not set in stone, but will try to stick to it as much as possible, as it is also important to spend time out):

Monday

- Write a blog about my previous week and also up and coming week (you are reading week 1)

- Watch training videos on the way to and from work (Just about to start watching Coaching Kristy 2 from Deuces Cracked)

- Exercise workout

- Relax in the evening and catch some TV, upload the blog etc.

Tuesday

- Read the mental game of poker (or another book once done)

- Play the Black Belt Poker League game and play some 20nl cash

Wednesday

- Watch training videos on the way to and from work

- Quick workout before playing

- Play the Orange Belt Freeroll on Black Belt Poker and some 20nl cash

Thursday

- No Playing as this will be a midweek review day and check on the plan for the week

- Review hands and post 2 hands on the Black Belt Poker hand review board

- Exercise workout

Friday

- Relax NO poker playing day

- Update my site with 1-2 articles and update current offers on a site

Saturday

- Long walk with the dog before lunch

- Exercise workout when I get back

- Update my site with offers and promotions

- Play some afternoon SNG’s (mainly $5 double ups)

- Then some 20NL cash in the evening

Sunday

- Walk the dog before lunch

- Read and review from yesterday

- Play some 20NL cash and maybe try to satellite to the Sunday £200k

Rinse and repeat weekly until the end of November.

All this is my goal of reaching Purple belt by Nottingham Live in November. As I’m on 3,975.47 points, this only means I need to get a further 1024.53 points to reach Purple. At 4points per $1 in rake that means I need to generate just over $250 in rake between now and the end of October (6 weeks away). This is $42 a week or $10.50 for each night I’m going to be playing according to the above plan (4 days a week). So all in all this should easily be attainable.

Help me get a few more points and some nice points yourself by signing up to Black Belt Poker and using referral code zartog

But wait… not only is there going to be $250 bounties on some players heads, there will also be added value if you are a higher level belt player.
